By Gayle Ronan Sims INQUIRER STAFF WRITER Posted: November 28, 2006 Michael S. Lasuchin, 83, a prolific artist and professor at the University of the Arts for 20 years, died Thursday of cardiac arrest at home in East Mount Airy. Mr. Lasuchin was born in Kramatorsk, in what was then the Soviet Union, one of two sons of a laborer. The family immigrated in 1951 to Philadelphia, settling at Fifth Street and Girard Avenue. Mr. Lasuchin and his brother, Victor, got jobs as package designers at Container Corp. of America near Conshohocken, where they worked evening shifts while attending art school from 1954 to 1971. Mr. Lasuchin earned a bachelor's degree in fine art in 1965 from Philadelphia College of Art and a master's in 1971 from Tyler School of Art at Temple University. He was hired to teach printmaking by what is now the University of the Arts in 1972. He retired as a professor in 1991. Mr. Lasuchin's work has appeared in countless exhibits in this country and abroad. His work is in the Library of Congress and Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others. He received numerous awards for his art from the National Watercolor Society, Philadelphia Watercolor Club, Mellon Foundation, and others. His prints display a variety of techniques and his watercolors are hard-edged geometrical shapes in soft atmospheric fields. His abstracts express what Mr. Lasuchin called an "encoded visual diary." Mr. Lasuchin's last piece was awarded a gold medal in 2005 by the Color Print Society of America. In addition to his brother, Mr. Lasuchin is survived by his wife of 17 years, Dorothy Roschen Lasuchin. < Previous page |
